I've tried a lot of things with no change, but probably didn't hit the right one. If you have any insight into this, I'd be very grateful. Here is a HijackThis log for this machine. It seems to date back to when I installed Trend Micro PC-Cillin, but this may be inaccurate. I've done the CClean bit, can't find any viruses or trojans, and yet this highly annoying stalling goes on right in the middle of whatever I'm doing. When Firefox is running it takes up a lot of memory, but even when it's not, this happens. The constant theme of processes running at the top of memory usage seems to be IE, of course, but also sqlservr.exe (several copies running at the same time often) and Tmproxy.exe (the Trend Micro process) and PcScnSrv.exe.

and suddenly the CPU usage (as measured by Program Manager, which I always have running) goes to 100%, and sticks there for 15-30 seconds. I'll be opening new IE windows, downloading files etc. SHA-1: c65df8200649eee99c729227e13d6d2dae56c5e7 Filename: ZASPSetupWeb_140_508_000.I have 1.5 Gig of RAM on a desktop AMD system running XP Pro, SP 2, with Trend Micro PC-Cillin for anti virus.
